Back to game development

With me being on an internship full time, every day 8 hours and a very hectic family life I find it very hard to be motivated to go home and not just chill out and relax. I’ve been telling myself for sometime I’m going to get back into during free time I do have as I need to make sure I build a strong portfolio because University work just will not cut it on its own. Employers want to see how you’ve expanded your skills outside of studies as this separates the people who actually enjoy programming/ game development. I’ve decided to continue the game I was working on during the three thing game hopefully getting the rest of the team involved because it’s defiantly going to be worked on then if we have each other. Our game is a top down action game revolving around an assassin that has to kill guards patrolling a house to rescue someone. We started doing this for windows phone 7 mainly because only one of us had developed for that platform before and we wanted to learn. It sounded like a great idea at the time but as I continue development now I don’t have a windows phone nor do two of the other members of our team. This isn’t the greatest situation because I feel it vital to test on actual hardware rather than the emulator.

Here is our game when in map view, on the phone you can pinch out to view the area but once you start moving the joystick image it snaps into the assassins view and his immediate area. When in the darker areas the white bar goes black and he is invisible to the guards unless really close. Whiter areas (lights) are when he is in plain view and the soldiers are attracted and shoot on site (and through walls, which needs working on). The assassins only weapon is his knife (guns attract attention of other guards) so he has to be very close to kill the guards. Overall it does need a fair amount of work, but the team and I were really pleased with our efforts considering we had nothing but some sprites I had done the night before. All the code and most the art where done in the 24 hour period. This poses well for the future that we did so well in the short amount of time, imagine if we did another 24 hours again I think we’d have a near complete, releasable game. We’re still considering which platform to bring it to due to lack of windows phone hardware available for each of us to test and with my phone contract renewal some far off, I don’t think I’ll be getting a new phone soon.

  1. Maybe speak to rob and see if he’s got any windows phones left to lend out?

      good idea, I’ll drop him an email. It’ll be useful because we’ll want it back after a certain time, so I have a deadline for completion.
