Far Cry 3 Launch Event

Last night I attended a Far Cry 3 launch event hosted by Platform Expo and Ubisofts Field Marketing Executive, Josh Winston.  A fairly modest crowd turned up to say the least which I suppose is what you expect at for the first time an event like this is run, but it was great to have a chat with everyone especially Lindsay West, the founder of Platform Expo. What he talked about really appealed to me as someone who has always lived in Hull. We have this fantastic University with such an accredited courses, such as Computer Science, but top jobs in the city itself are mediocre and sparse, especially for what Platform is all about, the games industry. I myself have always just accepted the fact that after University I’ll be moving away from Hull and away most of my family, except my partner and son to find myself a job in the industry because the closest studios are Sheffield, Leeds, York and even Doncaster. Why should this be the case, why won’t people invest in Hull? This is where Platform comes in.

Platform is all about promoting the city, promoting the industry and trying to make Hull a better place. Trying to mix education with business is vital to the growth of industries such as the gaming one and investment is key to create business growth and sustainable employment opportunities. I hope to get involved with Platform as I can really see the big picture and the potential for huge growth. Hull will always have this stigma attached to it from people who have never been “worst city in the UK apparently” yet alot of my friends who attend University really enjoy their time in the city and one main reason they leave? No jobs.

Anyway, to the actual game. I’ve never played the other two Far Cry games myself but I’ve always heard great things about the first. It’s truly stunning graphically, one of those games where your happy to let other people play so you can watch, especially on the huge HD projector that was at the event. The quick go that I had on it was also really great and It really feels like a brilliant play, open world but with an amazing storyline, so I’m told. The current Metacritic score is 91 with Eurogamer, The Telegraph and The Guardian all giving it 100/100, pretty impressive. Hopefully its out on Steam pretty soon, I think I’ll add it to my list to Santa.

Hopefully Platform runs more launch and gaming events like this and I’ll be trying to get myself on board promoting in whichever way I can, starting with this blog post.

Glad the event was good, albeit a ‘modest crowd’ you say. Yes, looking forward to seeing what Platform does next year; the Global Game Jam 2013 being one of the first events to kick it off.
